A Christian Classical Academy for Junior Kindergarten-Eighth Grade

Immanuel Lutheran School was originally founded in downtown Alexandria in 1871 as a mission of Immanuel Lutheran Church. After thriving for forty years, the school was closed during World War I. As World War II was ending, Immanuel Lutheran Church moved to it’s current location. The school reopened in 1945 and has flourished ever since.

In our 70th consecutive year of operation, Immanuel offers a Christian and classical education in Northern Virginia, with a liberal arts curriculum for Junior Kindergarten (pre-kindergarten) through 8th grade.

What Is a Classical Education?

Classical education aims for wisdom, eloquence, and virtue. The patriarchs of western civilization understood that education was more than the acquisition of basic skills and mere competency. The purpose of education was to transform, to elevate, and to refine the mind and the soul. Our students enjoy a rich academic environment that includes Shurley grammar, Saxon mathematics, classical literature, Latin (beginning in 3rd grade), science, weekly chapel services, Christian character formation, world and American history, music, art, and much more. Immanuel strives to return to excellence in teaching, curriculum, and expectations.
