Why Latin?

Latin study begins in the third grade at Immanuel. Some parents ask us, "Why teach Latin?" The study of Latin greatly enhances a child's ability to learn other languages - particularly those derived from Latin, such as Spanish and French. A student with a thorough training in Latin also demonstrates increased proficiencies in Engish grammar and vocabulary. Accordingly, Latin significantly increases verbal scores on tests such as the SAT and the GRE. Analytical and problem solvings scores, often associated closely with math skills, also increase significantly among students of Latin. In addition to strengthening language skills, Latin helps exercise and form the mind, teaching exactness in observation, judgment and expression. Every lesson in Latin is a lesson in grammar and logic—skills essential to cultivating agile and creative minds!
