Pastor Eckardt

The Reverend Peter J. Eckardt has been the Associate Pastor at Immanuel since August 2015. He is married to Allison (nee Everett).

Pastor Eckardt was ordained in May of 2015, was married to his lovely wife Allison in June, moved to Alexandria in July, and began work at Immanuel in August! He is thrilled to serve here as Associate Pastor, being able to preach, teach, and administer the sacraments regularly and in varied scenarios.

Having received his Master's of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Ind., in 2014, Pastor Eckardt then stayed at the seminary for an additional year as a graduate assistant to work on a Master's in Sacred Theology (STM). Still a work in progress, his thesis is on St. Paul's Christological hermeneutic of the Old Testament.

Pastor Eckardt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College (Rock Island, Ill.) with majors in Music and German and a minor in Classics. He has lived and studied in Germany on three separate occasions. Most recently, he spent the 2011-2012 school year in Oberursel at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule, studying Lutheran theology and taking opportunities to travel around Germany and Europe.

An avid Packer fan and proud cheesehead, Pastor Eckardt was born in Wisconsin but grew up mostly in Illinois. The third of six sons, he comes from a large family and enjoys having several nieces and nephews. His father, Burnell F. Eckardt, Jr., is an LCMS pastor in Kewanee, Ill., and the editor of Gottesdienst: The Journal of Lutheran Liturgy.

Pastor Eckardt shares with his father a deep interest in the liturgy of the Lutheran Church—its historical roots, practice, and theology. His other areas of special theological interest include Lutheran hymnody, New Testament exegetical studies, and patristics.

In addition to speaking German fluently, Pastor Eckardt has acquired some facility in American Sign Language and Spanish and has preached in both of these languages. Within the last few years, he has been on Lutheran mission-related trips to Venezuela, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic.

Pastor Eckardt enjoys the excitement of living on the East Coast and particularly loves exploring the DC area with his wife.
